Where German cockroaches hide in a Marshalltown kitchen, and why spray misses them

September 17, 2026

Two in the morning, you turn on the kitchen light for a glass of water, and something small and light brown runs for the gap beside the dishwasher. By the time you have found a shoe it is gone, and it is gone somewhere you cannot follow.

That last part is the whole problem. The home page sums German cockroaches up in two sentences. They ride in on cardboard and secondhand appliances, and they settle behind warm kitchen equipment. What that leaves out is how completely they live inside things. The roaches crossing your floor at night are the ones that ran out of room. Most of the population is a few feet away, inside something warm, in a space you would need a screwdriver to open.

Where do German cockroaches hide in a kitchen?

Inside warm, tight voids within a few feet of food and water. The refrigerator compressor bay, the gaps along both sides of the dishwasher, the motor housing under or behind the stove, screw holes and seams inside cabinet boxes, the wall void behind the sink basin, and the space under the kick plate at the toe of the base cabinets. Dark, warm, and narrow enough to touch them on both sides.

In rough order of how often they turn up:

  • The refrigerator, at the back bottom. The compressor bay runs warm around the clock, the drip pan holds water, and the insulated shell around the motor is full of narrow seams.
  • The dishwasher, down both sides where the machine meets the cabinet run, plus the insulation blanket and the inside of the door panel. Warm and damp at the same time, which is rare in a house.
  • The stove and the over-range microwave. Motor housings, the cavity behind the control panel, the greasy underside of the hood.
  • Cabinet interiors, at the corners. Screw holes, the seam where two boxes were joined, and the top shelf where nobody reaches.
  • The void behind the sink basin and the hole the drain line takes through the wall.
  • Small appliances that stay plugged in. A coffee maker base, a toaster oven, a microwave that lives on the counter.

Every one of those is within a short run of a crumb and a water film. If you want one picture to hold onto, make it the back bottom corner of the fridge.

Are these the roaches that breed indoors, or the ones that wander in?

Two different situations, and they call for opposite responses. German cockroaches are small, light brown, with two dark stripes running back from the head, and they complete their entire life cycle indoors in a kitchen or a bathroom. The large dark roaches that show up one at a time in a basement after heavy rain are outdoor insects that wandered in and generally do not establish.

One big roach by the floor drain in August, seen once, is a wanderer. Nothing to do about it beyond the usual moisture and gap work. Several small striped ones in the kitchen, or one in daylight, means the opposite. Roaches are nocturnal, so daytime activity usually means the harborage is crowded enough to push them out into the open. That one takes a program.

Why did the roaches come back a week after I sprayed?

Because the can reached the foragers and never reached the harborage. A surface spray treats the floor, the baseboard and the counter, which is where the hungriest roaches walk at night. It does not get inside a compressor bay or a cabinet seam, so the females sitting in there with egg capsules are untouched, and a week or two later the next wave hatches into a kitchen that looks treated.

There is a second cost that is worse than the first. Over-the-counter roach sprays are repellent by design, and roaches read a treated band as an edge to avoid. So they shift. Out of the cabinet you sprayed and into the dishwasher void, out of the kitchen and down the plumbing chase toward a bathroom that never had them. One harborage becomes several, in places harder to reach than the one you started with.

Foggers are the same mechanism with a bigger cloud. The mist settles on open horizontal surfaces, which are the surfaces roaches are not sitting on during the day, and the repellent push gets applied to the whole room at once, so a spare bathroom that never had roaches gets a starter population.

What does gel bait plus a growth regulator do differently?

Bait is food, so it travels to the places you cannot reach. A roach feeds on a gel placement near its harborage, goes home, and the active ingredient moves through the group by way of droppings and dead nestmates. That is the part a spray cannot do. The treatment gets carried inside the void instead of sitting outside it.

The growth regulator handles the other half. It does not kill adults. It keeps the young from developing into breeding adults, so the population stops replacing itself while the bait works through it. Baiting alone against an established German roach population is a race with reproduction. The regulator ends the race.

This combination looks slower for the first few days, because nothing is dying dramatically on your counter while you watch. It finishes faster, because it works on the whole population instead of the small fraction that happened to be out walking.

How long does it take, and how many visits?

More than one visit, over a period of weeks, and any company that names a firm number before looking at your kitchen is guessing. The reason is timing. Some of the next generation is inside egg capsules on the day the first bait goes down, and nothing reaches an unhatched capsule. The program has to still be there when those hatch.

What progress looks like, in order: daytime sightings stop first, then night sightings thin out, then the bait placements stop being eaten. That last one is the real signal, and it is why a tech will look at placements on a return visit before deciding anything is finished. Nobody honest sells a roach job as one visit.

What should you do before the tech comes, and what should you not do?

Two things help and one thing hurts. Take away competing food so the bait is the best thing in the room, get cardboard out of the kitchen, and clear the under-sink cabinet so the void behind it can be reached. The thing that hurts is spraying anything in the days before the visit.

  • Wipe the grease film off the side panel of the stove and the strip of floor under the fridge vent. That film is a food supply.
  • Pet bowls up overnight, and the ring of crumbs under the toaster gone.
  • Break down and remove cardboard. Boxes under the sink, flattened stacks in the pantry, the delivery box that has been by the recycling bin for a week.
  • Empty the cabinet under the sink and the lower cabinets next to the dishwasher, so placements go where the roaches are instead of where there is room.
  • Do not spray, bomb or set off anything in the week before. Repellent residue near a planned bait placement drives roaches off the bait that would have ended this, and it costs the program weeks.

If you have already sprayed, say so when you book. It changes where placements can go and how soon they will be accepted.

Is this the apartment or the whole building?

In a duplex, a rental, or one of the older Marshalltown houses split into units, assume the neighbors matter. Roaches move through shared plumbing chases, the gaps around pipes between units, and shared laundry and storage. Treating one kitchen while the unit next door stays untreated produces the same result every time, which is a clean month and then a slow return.

That conversation, including who is responsible for paying, is laid out on the bed bug treatment page. Property managers and restaurant kitchens run on documented, unit-by-unit protocols instead, which is commercial pest control.

What does cockroach treatment cost in Marshalltown?

A one-time general pest visit covering ants, spiders and roaches runs $150 - $350 on the pest control cost page, with pest type, infestation size and house size moving the number. A quarterly plan is $40 - $75 / month on the same page.

Read those honestly for this pest. A general visit range fits a kitchen where the problem is young and contained. A population that has been building for months is the kind of job that page says gets flagged at quote time rather than squeezed into a range, because it takes return visits. The number that means anything comes after someone has opened the cabinet under your sink.

How do roaches get into a Marshalltown house in the first place?

They are carried in. German cockroaches do not cross a yard and find your foundation; they arrive inside something, and the something is usually cardboard or a used appliance. Grocery and delivery boxes, moving boxes that sat in a garage somewhere else, a secondhand microwave, a used fridge off an online listing, a couch from a curb. Egg capsules travel the same way, which is how a house gets an infestation with no adult ever seen making the trip.

The prevention is dull and it works. Break boxes down outside and put them in the bin instead of stacking them in the pantry or under the sink. Before a secondhand appliance comes through the door, turn it around in the driveway and look at the back, the underside, and inside the motor housing, and wipe it out there rather than in the kitchen. Do the same with the drawer bottoms of used furniture. If you are moving out of a building that had roaches, do not take the boxes that were in that apartment.
